The first of the Osprey's of the season have
returned to the nest in Whinlatter forest next to

Bassenthwaite Lake. The birds first arrived in this
area in 2001 and appear to like the site so much that they have returned every year since.

This pair in question seem to have drawn attention to themselves from all over the world.

The pair migrate each year to Africa to avoid the cold winter weather and then return individually around April time, just before the Easter break. Last year the two birds hatched and raised two chicks which flew the nest last year.

The bird that has been spotted may or may not be the famous Lake District pair but may be one of the chicks from last year or just one of many that stop off on there way to Scotland which seems to be their stronghold in the UK. Investigations are continuing to find out if it is one of the local birds.

The forestry commission has a web camera set up alongside the nest to view what goes on throughout the year along with a hide on the east side of Bassenthwaite lake in Dodd Wood.
