Can't See The Wood For The Trees

Storms that hit Cumbria on the 7th January 2005
resulted in the damage of over 500,000 trees
which were blown down by winds over 100mph
in strength. The area affected was nearly 350
hectares of Forestry Commission land.

It is only now that the clear up operation has
managed to remove over 500,000 trees with
another 100,000 remaining.

Some of the areas affected were Grizedale Forest
and Whinlatter Forest, as was areas near Carlisle
and Matterdale near Keswick.

The damage caused by the storms is not all bad news. The fallen trees have provided food and shelter to both flora and fauna, which is hoped, will increase the wildlife in the area over time.
