Rare Butterflies To Return

The Marsh Fritillary butterfly is rarely seen in Cumbria due to changes in land use and loss of habitat.
The project aims to release over 20,000 caterpillars at particular sites throughout Cumbria in an attempt to reverse the decline of their numbers

This project has been in development for over three years where the caterpillars have been bread in captivity.

The cause of their decline was due to the draining of farm land for cattle making their strongholds more and more isolated. This is slowly being reversed through a Government scheme, which helps and advises farmers on how to bring back the lost habitats and how to manage them.
