Deer Poaching Warning
Deer poaching in the Lake District
National Park is on the increase according to Police & wildlife groups.
The increase has been linked to the demand for venison meat for the Christmas
period.
Populations of deer in the Lake District are already lower than what the North West British Deer Campaign Group would like and this poaching is putting extra pressure on these populations.
Poachers can get upto £150 for a stag carcase but this is at a price as getting caught means they face a fine of upto £5,000.
A spokesperson for NWBDCG, Peter
Robson, said Poachers are reacting to a greater demand for the meat
at this time of the year, The animals are being shot with illegal calibre
weapons and also being chased with dogs at night.
