Massive Cull Of Grey Squirrels
A massive cull of Grey Squirrels is to take
place across England in order to encourage
the dwindling numbers of Red Squirrels
which is the native squirrel in the UK.
The Grey squirrel was introduced to the UK in the 19th Century and since then they have competed against the native red for food and territory.
The grey squirrels seem to do better than the red with one of the factors being that the grey, a carrier of the squirrelpox virus, is more resistant to it than our red squirrel.
The cull is being organised by The
Department for the Environment, Food and
Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and the Forestry
Commission as well as consultations with
animal groups such as the RSPCA, English
Nature, The National Trust and The
European Squirrel Initiative.
The cull is set to take place shortly and will run over the next 3 years.
