Thirlmere Trees To Be Cut Down
A utility company is to fell
thousands of trees around Thirlmere reservoir in order to return native species
to the hillsides.
At present the forests around the area are mainly conifer ones which were
planted at the creation of Thirlmere reservoir over a century ago.
This programme is being carried out by United Utilities with tree felling taking place over a three year period.
As well as encouraging the return of native woodland it will also help wildlife and bring back great views across the lake.
The work will be difficult due to the topography of the area as certain machines cannot access the steep hillsides.
While work is being carried out there will be some disruption on the nearby A591 Keswick to Windermere road but this will be kept at a minimum due to some of the work being carried out at night.
Paul Clavey of United Utilities said In effect we are putting right what, with modern hindsight, was done wrong last century.
