Youth Hostel To Be Made Self Sufficient

Britain's most remote youth hostel is to be made even more isolated with new plans to return a valley in Cumbria back to wild woodland.

Blacksail youth hostel at the head of the Ennerdale Valley in the Northwest of the Lake District National Park will be made self sufficient under the new plans when it becomes out of bounds to motor vehicles.

Presently a fund raising effort is underway to raise money for a refurbishment of the hostel, spearheaded by mountaineer Sir Chris Bonnington. This will include installing solar panels, compost toilets and hydroelectric power.

At present, conifer forests cover the area but new plans will bring the introduction of native species such as juniper, oak & birch.
